The Art Museum of Northern Norway |
The Art Museum
of Northern Norway
is another sight you must be sure not to miss when you come
to Tromsø. In the museum you find Norwegian visual and
applied art from the 19th century and until today.

The Art Museum
The museum was established in 1985. It especially focuses on
art from the Northern region. There are about 1400 works in
the museum; paintings, sculptures, prints, photographs,
textiles and various objects of applied art. You will find
works by famous Norwegian artists like Edvard Munch, Odd
Nerdrum, J. C. Dahl, Harriet Backer, and Kristian Krohg. One
of the paintings is Munch’s “Hjemvendende arbeidere” (1920)
from the first decades of modernism.

The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions of both
Norwegian and international art. The diversity of the
exhibitions makes the museum interesting for both adults and
children.
The museum is located at Prostneset, very close to the
Tromsø Cathedral, in Tromsøs oldest street Sjøgata. The
entrance is free, and the opening hours are Mondays: Closed,
Tuesdays – Fridays: 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., Saturdays and
Sundays: 12 noon – 5 p.m.
