08.02.2009
For various reasons, the 2014 website has been lying dormant for some time. From now on the page will be updated on a weekly basis; the company "Sjakkhuset" in Oslo is responsible for editing the homepage. A big thanks to the previous editor Jan Sigmund Berglund, who has done a terrific job in creating and updating the homepage.

While you are waiting for the first major news item, take a look at the homepage for this year's big event in Tromsø, the Arctic Chess Challenge in August. It will definitely be another great event in Tromsø: already eight GM's and one WGM are on the list of players. If you haven't booked your flight to Tromsø yet, hurry up!

26.11.2008 The Olympiad in Dresden is over

Dresden Diary   Pictures Norwegian Teams   Results Norwegian teams:  Open       Women

The Tromsø 2014 team is very satisfied with their stay during the Dresden Olympiad, and feel that we are taken as a serious and good contender as host for the 2014 Olympiad. A lot of nice small talks with interesting people and more serious talks with important people have been done during the days in Dresden. We have been viewing a very impressive arrangement in Germany this time and have learnt a lot about what goes on behind the scenes. This will help us being more prepared in 2014. Well done Dresden.

When it comes to the two other Norwegian teams it was bit disappointing not to climb higher than the pre-rank, the guys in the open section were ranked as number 19 and ended as number 21. The women started out as number 40 and ended in place number 53.

Anyway - the Olympiad is a tough tournament and the teams gave us excitement and joy during all the eleven rounds. Thanks to you all. Especially thanks to Kjetil A. Lie who has been telling us inside stories during the tournament as well as playing a very strong tournament. Also the captains of both teams Rune Djurhuus and Roaul Abrahamsen have sent us reports and pictures. Sadly most of the commentaries are still in Norwegian, but they will hopefully in a short time be translated into English.

A lot of pictures have arrived lately, and soon a picture gallery will be seen here as well.

Hang on... 2014 is coming sooner than you ever know! Before that we will be back in the Khanty Mansyisk in 2010 and hopefully all the three teams then we will be satisfied with their scores in the end.

19.11.2008 Strong support for Norway and Tromsø
The idea to hold the 2014 Chess Olympiad in Tromsø, Norway receives a strong support from many chess federation representatives in Dresden being present for the FIDE Congress. Also Horst Metzing, the well-known secretary general of the German Chess Federation, (to the right on the picture) expressed his appreciation of the concept and wished all success to the Tromsø team onwards. Here he talks to Torstein Bae, who is FIDE zonal president of the Nordic countries and a former president of the Norwegian Chess Federation.

18.11.2008 Guess who?
Frederic Friedel in the always superb www.chessbase.com are writing about his trip to Tromsø this summer.

A lot of photos from the barbeque-party during the ACC  as well as many nice pictures from his mountain-trip.

What we can read is that we have the full support from his side in our struggle to be more than the candidate city:

- You think this is all? Not by a long shot. Stand by for part two, where we go fishing in the Norwegian Fjords and whale-watching over the continental shelf. And then tell us with a straight face: this is not the right place for a Chess Olympiad.   Read it all!

18.11.2008 Kenya at the Tromsø stand
These two Kenyan representatives are among the many kind people who already visited our Tromsø stand at the Dresden Olympiad. Here they are together with our representatives Øystein Brekke (left) and Børge Robertsen, general manager of the Tromsø 2014 Chess Olympiad project. The Kenyans liked and supported this idea to travel to Northern Norway for a 2014 Tromsø Chess Olympiad. Like many others they are particularly glad to learn that because of the Golf stream Tromsø is not a cold place, what everybody can also see from the nice films we are showing.

They also like to hear that Tromsø is very LIGHT during August, yes even close to being the famous Midnight sun!

17.11.2008 Round 5; Both teams lost (Norwegian)
The loss was to stronger teams, and the Norwegians promise to hit back already in the next round. Kjetil and Rune are reporting.

16.11.2008 Round 4; Norway - England 2-2     Norway - South Africa 4-0
All our teams are doing great in Dresden; Our team in the open group held England to 2-2, and the girls beat South Africa 4-0. Both teams are far higher one the ranking list after 4 rounds than their starting rank.

The team trying to bring all the people to Tromsø in 2014 are telling about great feedback on their stand; Most people visiting them are just telling that they hope for victory for Norway when it comes to the voting in 2010.

We've got to reports today; One from Kjetil reporting from the match Norway - England and one from GM Rune Djurhuus about the 4-0 in the woman's section. Rune is the captain of the women's team. As usual we bring them in Norwegian until they are translated sometime tomorrow afternoon.

At the picture on the you see from left; Leif Erlend Johannessen, Jon Ludvig Hammer, Kjetil A Lie, Simen Agdestein and Magnus Carlsen. They are posing in front of the stand to Chess Olympiad Tromsø 2014.

14.11.2008 Round 2; Great Norwegian day!
The fight outside the boards is going fine. Our own chess president, Jøran Aulin-Jansson are telling us; " A lot of people visiting the Norwegian stand. Many of them were interested in us while the rest really appreciated coffee and chairs, notwithstanding those who played chess on our chessboard at their disposal. We had a meeting with the organizers of the next Chess Olympics in Khanty Mansyisk, and we were welcomed to the World Cp which is to take place next year. EVERYONE says our stand is very nice, and that being this early on the pitch, is indeed a good move."

Both the Norwegian teams won their matches 3-1, and our man at the field, Kjetil A. Lie is reporting about good spirit in the team, and fun and joy at the boards.

The two norwegian teams. Photo:stein.erik.kirkeboen@aftenposten.no 13.11.2008 Round 1; Norway in uniforms!
The Norwegian Teams are playing with similar clothes this year, especially in the first round :) Here we can see the team in front of the stand of Chess Olympiad Tromsø 2014.

The men faced Austria, and won  3-1, while the ladies met the very strong team from Bulgaria and lost 1,5-2,5.

GM Kjetil Lie are reporting from Dresden:
"The Norwegian delegation arrived Dresden's Hotel Maritim yesterday in good spirits. Not only did we have a smooth jorney, but we also discovered that we've got a fantastic hotel, with swimmingpool, gym, bar and a overwhelming breakfast- and lunch buffet. Of course this adds extra motivation! Yesterday's opening ceremony also was high quality, and all in all we are happy with the practical things so far. It should be mentioned that Florencio Campomanes, FIDE honorary president, lived up to his reputation as one of the world's best speakers. ....."
